Why do you think He gathered the surplus? Firstly, He wanted those who were witnesses to the miracle to see God's overflowing provision. Secondly, He was teaching the people to save in the period of abundance. Thirdly, He taught them to refrain from wasting resources. Finally, He wanted to give the boy who gave up his lunch the surplus to teach the people that whoever gives to Christ receives plenty in return.
